All 10 Saw movies ranked from worst to best
6. Spiral: From the Book of Saw
Darren Lynn Bousman returned to direct the ninth installment, the first spinoff movie in the Saw franchise which follows another Jigsaw copycat killer. Spiral: From the Book of Saw came out in 2021 and was written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger. Yes, the formula is tired by now, but I can’t lie — I was excited to watch this movie when it was announced.
Unfortunately, its release was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and hit theaters about a year after it was supposed to. Whether that was part of the reason or not, the movie was also a box office bomb for the franchise, grossing a little over $40 million on a reported $20 million budget.
Spiral attempts to bring life back to the franchise, and while it doesn’t always hit, it’s still an entertaining watch. It’s a fresh take, which is exciting, incorporating themes like police corruption with a brand-new cast including Chris Rock, Max Minghella, and Samuel L. Jackson. This marks the first movie in the series that does not feature Tobin Bell as Jigsaw/John Kramer, so in a way, it feels like a completely separate universe.
Though there are still traps in Spiral like every other Saw movie, this entry is at its best when it focuses on the detective story. It might not be that memorable, but it’s not bad, either.
