5. Jigsaw

The eighth installment in the Saw franchise, Jigsaw, is nowhere near as good as the first three movies in the series, but it’s still pretty fun. Directed by the Spierig Brothers and written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, the movie made a little over $100 million at the box office on a reported $10 million budget. It came out in 2017, seven years after The Final Chapter.

Taking place about 10 years after Jigsaw/John Kramer’s death, the movie follows detectives trying to solve a series of murders similar to those Jigsaw committed. Five new victims are abducted and must solve various traps to escape, while also trying to figure out who the suspected copycat killer is.

Jigsaw shockingly sees the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer, leaving audiences confused as to how he survived all those years ago. Well, as it turns out, he really didn’t. The movie takes a nonlinear storytelling approach, as we discover, showing us two different timelines of events.

We ultimately find out who the Jigsaw copycat killer is in the present timeline, and though it’s not that satisfying of a reveal, it’s still entertaining. Sure, there are a few things that don’t exactly add up, but if you’re looking for something you can turn your mind off and just enjoy, it does the job. Overall, the movie is full of nostalgia and is an improvement from the past several films in the series.
