All 10 Saw movies ranked from worst to best
4. Saw III
Of course, after Saw II was another major success at the box office, the studio wanted another. The third movie in the franchise came out in 2006 and saw director Darren Lynn Bousman return, with a screenplay penned by Leigh Whannell. Like the first two movies, Saw III is a solid entry in the franchise, combining elements of horror and violence with emotional and psychological plot points.
In Saw III, Jigsaw is dying from cancer and kidnaps a surgeon, meanwhile, Detective Eric Matthews is still being held captive, and Amanda continues to work as Jigsaw’s apprentice. As expected, the movie follows the victims as they must put themselves through life-threatening situations to solve the traps and attempt to escape. As they make difficult decisions to survive, we learn about their pasts.
One of the more memorable and disturbing traps in Saw III is the rack trap, where captive Jeff is given the opportunity to get revenge on the drunk driver who killed his son when he finds him strapped to a machine that twists his limbs. There’s certainly a lot of shock value in this movie, something viewers can expect in each of the entries.
Jigsaw dies in Saw III, but of course, this is not the final time we see him in the franchise.
The twisted storytelling and psychological elements are Saw III‘s strong points, and as someone who loves Amanda’s storyline, it’s high on the list for me. As expected, the movie was a financial success, costing a reported $10 million to make and seeing a near-$165 million return at the box office.
