Superman and Lois: Every character ranked from worst to best

1. Clark Kent / Superman and Lois Lane

It might be a little predictable for the title characters to end up at the top of this list, but what isn’t predictable is the amount of times that Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch manage to stun us with their performances. Constantly outdoing themselves, the pair are veterans at bringing the show’s more nuanced portrayals of these iconic characters to life, but even then, from the very first episode, they’ve been perfect for these roles.

Superman and Lois‘ Man of Steel is unlike any version of the character we have ever seen. Hoechlin proved he can play the traditional Superman extremely well on Supergirl, but with the more character-driven writing of this series, he’s placed himself in another league entirely, quite possibly as the best actor to ever play the DC hero.

And what makes his Superman so special? Well, it might have something to do with the fact that he’s inherently Clark. By that we mean that the show is as much concerned with telling Clark Kent’s story as it is Superman’s. And this Clark Kent is a veteran superhero, raising two teenage sons, attempting to keep their secrets safe from the rest of Smallville, all while trying to save the world.

The same goes for Lois Lane. She’s still the intrepid reporter we know and love, but she’s also a mother who will do whatever it takes to protect her kids from harm. She’s a wife who stands up for her husband and is the light that he needs during the dark times. And she’s also a hero in her own right, bringing the people of Smallville the truth they deserve every time that she can.

Tulloch’s performance in season 3, as Lois battled stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer, is her most stunning work yet, and she has singlehandedly cemented herself in history as one of the greatest – if not indeed the greatest – actresses to ever play Lois Lane.

Superman and Lois succeeds on the strength of its title characters and the incredible performers bringing them to life. We can’t wait to see them back in action in season 4.
