Oppenheimer gets disappointing Peacock release update
Those waiting for Oppenheimer to hit streaming are growing impatient, and we come with a less-than-stellar update on its Peacock release.
One of the biggest movies of the year is undoubtedly Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s flick about the Manhattan Project and the man behind it all, American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The movie opened in theaters over the summer and, with the help of the “Barbenheimer” craze, was a major box office hit. It’s grossed almost a billion dollars worldwide, which is kind of unheard of for a three-hour historical drama.
Have yet to see Oppenheimer? Well, we’d definitely recommend seeing it on the big screen but streaming works, too. And while Barbie, which premiered in theaters on the same day as Oppenheimer, is now available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, the Cillian Murphy-led biopic is nowhere to be found online. We expect it to come to Peacock, but there seems to be no streaming release date in sight.
Oppenheimer is coming to Peacock, but not anytime soon
And now that we’ve ended October, we come bearing bad news for those looking to watch the Nolan movie at home. Peacock has released its list of new releases for the month, but Oppenheimer is not included. That means we’ll have to wait another month (at least) to see the critically acclaimed movie on the streaming service.
As we’ve seen with previous releases, new Universal movies are typically added to Peacock around 45 days after they hit theaters. But this just isn’t the case with Oppenheimer. This could be because it’s had such a long run in theaters and the studio wants to keep making that theater money for as long as possible. To put things into perspective, the movie came out in July, but I just searched for showtimes and I can go see Oppenheimer in 70mm this weekend at multiple theaters near me.
Digital Spy reports that Emma Thomas, a producer of Oppenheimer, told the Associated Press that fans can expect to be able to watch the movie at the end of November. Whether that means renting/buying on-demand or watching on streaming, we’re not sure. It’s probably the former. At this point, we’re predicting Oppenheimer will be added to Peacock by the end of the year, but it’s difficult to say exactly when.
Movies like Oppenheimer to stream right now
As for a new movie that is coming to Peacock in October, we’ve got Five Nights at Freddy’s releasing on Oct. 27, which is an adaptation of the horror video game of the same name. The movie will be released in theaters and on the streaming service on the same day. If spooky isn’t your thing and you were really looking forward to watching a historical drama, here are a few movies streaming right now that are in the same genre as Oppenheimer:
- The Imitation Game – Streaming on Netflix
- Operation Mincemeat – Streaming on Netflix
- Hidden Figures – Streaming on Disney+
- The Trench – Streaming on Peacock
- 1917 – Streaming on Showtime
Oppenheimer is getting some early Oscar buzz, with sites like Variety predicting it might even win Best Picture. The performances in the movie are certainly top-notch, so expect to see actors like Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. at least get nominated for Academy Awards, if not win them.
Happy streaming this weekend, readers! We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for the Oppenheimer streaming release date to update you all.
