5. Alien vs. Predator

Some people might be mad that I placed Alien vs. Predator so high on the list, but I have to admit it: it’s a guilty pleasure of mine! The first installment of the Alien/Predator crossover series, the movie was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and came out in 2004. Though Alien vs. Predator received negative reviews from critics, I watched it as a kid and there’s so much nostalgia for me there.

The plot follows a group of experts consisting of scientists, archaeologists, and mercenaries, who are recruited to investigate an ancient pyramid buried under ice in Antarctica. But what they find down in the pyramid is something they would’ve never imagined in their wildest dreams — Xenomorphs battling Predators. As usual with this franchise, Alien vs. Predator leaves the humans fighting for their lives, this time while also trying to uncover the pyramid’s secrets.

Featured in the cast of Alien vs. Predator are Sanaa Lathan, Lance Henriksen, Raoul Bova, Colin Salmon, Ewen Bremner, and Tommy Flanagan. None of the performances are necessarily standouts, but they’re not bad either. With a movie like this, you’re really just in it for the action over anything else.

There’s not necessarily much new in Alien vs. Predator, and it certainly doesn’t have as much depth as some of the earlier Alien movies. That said, I really do think it’s entertaining and the action sequences are pretty cool, even if there’s an overuse of CGI. We’ve pretty much made it to “so bad it’s good” territory with this entry in the franchise, and though it might not be intentionally funny, it’s a fun ride nevertheless.
