Heartstopper season 3 is not coming to Netflix in 2023

Heartstopper season 3 is in production but don’t be expecting it to arrive this year. 

Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring had viewers falling in love with their love story all over again when the second season of Heartstopper premiered on Netflix this summer. It had been over a year since the little-show-that-could turned into a global phenomenon upon the release of its first season, so fans were ready for more.

Netflix responded to the Heartstopper sensation by renewing the show for two more seasons. The first of those made its presence felt earlier this year and went on to become another huge hit for the streamer, with the show landing on No. 2 in its global Top 10 (and No. 1 in many countries around the world). Now, all the attention turns to the upcoming third season.

If you’re ready for the next chapter of Nick and Charlie’s story, you shouldn’t anticipate it anytime in the immediate future. Yes, Heartstopper season 3 has just recently commenced production, but that just reinforces that it won’t be released this year as it’s going to take some time to film, edit, and finalize.

Heartstopper season 3 release date predictions

While many of Netflix’s shows were affected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Heartstopper season 3 seemingly hasn’t been, as it is a British production. That much was made clear when series creator Alice Oseman confirmed that the third season was in production at the beginning of October.

The good news is that filming on season 3 has commenced, so we’re already a bit closer to Heartstopper‘s third season. However, it’s important to remember that filming on the show, even on a show like this with just eight short episodes per season, will take time.

If we look back at the first two seasons for reference, filming takes roughly about two or three months to complete, so we can probably expect Heartstopper season 3 to conclude principal photography between December and January. After that, there will be a bit of a wait as post-production will take place and Netflix will also have to figure out the right release window.

If production does wrap up in January, the earliest we could probably expect Heartstopper season 3 to premiere on Netflix would be mid-summer 2024. The second season commenced filming in the fall and it ultimately premiered in mid-summer, so season 3 could do the same. That being said, don’t be too surprised if it arrives early fall 2024, as production did commence a month later than season 2.

As always, that’s simply a prediction so it’s best to wait for an announcement from Netflix, but based on the previous seasons’ release patterns, we’re expecting it to premiere sometime in the second half of 2024.
