The most recent addition to the ever-growing line-up of esteemed actors to take on the role of Alfred Pennyworth, Andy Serkis brought the character to life in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

Like other recent portrayals of Alfred, Serkis’ interpretation in the 2022 film was younger and more outspoken – which makes sense given that the film is set during the Caped Crusader’s early days as a crime-fighter. Throughout the movie we see that this lends itself to some friction between him and Robert Pattinson’s Batman, as the loyal butler and friend isn’t afraid to tell Bruce what’s on his mind – even when the young hero doesn’t necessarily agree with him.

Serkis quickly proves himself to be a worthy successor to the legendary role, and there are some real moments of brilliance in his reserved performance. The only issue was his overall lack of screen-time in The Batman, which prevented him from being a bigger part of the movie (in spite of his overall importance to the story).

That said, Serkis’ screen presence was certainly larger-than-life throughout and he left us wanting more – which we hope to see a great deal of in the eagerly-awaited The Batman sequel.
