7. Jack Bannon

An absolutely fantastic spot for one of the newer versions of Alfred Pennyworth to land on our list, Jack Bannon was nothing short of a revelation throughout the entirety of Pennyworth. It’s true that this is a very different version of the character than the one we’re used to, as being a butler couldn’t be further from his mind – even if it’s what his father wants him to do.

It’s a larger-than-life role for sure, perhaps even moreso than the traditional Alfred, as it requires a strong screen presence to pull it off, and it goes without saying that Bannon absolutely knocks it out of the part at every given moment throughout that 10-episode season.

He’s cocky with ease, arrogant without effort and bloody well captivating with charm, as he goes above and beyond to introduce us to a new, grittier and hardened version of the character. Yes, there are recognizable elements in there, but this is very much Bannon’s original work we’re watching on our screens – and in all honesty, it’s nothing shot of fascinating.

Thanks to Bannon, Alfred Pennyworth is the hero of his story and it’s a joy to watch him grow. We’ll sadly miss the show now that HBO Max has canceled it after three seasons but we can still say one thing, mates: He was absolutely brill.
