After a short time, Norman Osborn could, once again, become Spider-Man’s deadliest enemy, the Green Goblin.
In Amazing Spider-Man No. 50 by Nick Spencer, Norman Osborn’s sins were taken from him. It was the first time in years that his mind was clear. There wasn’t a Goblin voice in his head telling him to do deplorable and murderous things.
Soon after that, Norman started to atone for his sins. He created a new tech suit for Peter Parker, became the Gold Goblin to save people, and, generally, became a good human. Of course, nothing good lasts forever when it comes to Peter Parker.
In Amazing Spider-Man No. 32 by Zeb Wells, Kraven the Hunter and the Red Goblin attempt to return Norman’s sins to him. Instead, they were given to Spider-Man. With the Goblin inside of him, Spider-Man dons his black suit and goes on a rampage. He tries to kill Tombstone, Mary Jane’s husband Paul, and causes general chaos throughout New York. In issue No. 35, Red Goblin, Kraven, and Norman Osborn successfully remove the sins from Spider-Man. Unfortunately, there’s a cost: Osborn has his sins again.
The Green Goblin could be about to make his Marvel return
The last page shows Osborn saying, “Heh” under his breath after seeing the Green Goblin’s reflection on his desk. Norman covers his mouth in terror. He knows the Goblin is back inside him. It’s only a matter of time before he takes over again.
Norman’s new personality has been fantastic. He’s been careful not to return to the person he was and understands the opportunity he’s given. He considers the relationship he has with Peter an honor. He even told MJ he enjoyed getting to get to know her. It’s a shame that it won’t be his choice.
There was no way that Marvel Comics was going to leave the Green Goblin gone forever. He’s a staple in the Spider-Man lore. It would be like Batman without The Joker or Wolverine without Sabretooth. The Green Goblin might become a major player with the upcoming Marvel Comics event Gang War. If so, don’t be surprised if he becomes the new Kingpin of Crime in New York. However, this writer hopes he’s wrong. Hero Norman Osborn is a better character.
