It has been revealed that an animated project featuring a crossover between Mortal Kombat and DC Universe had been pitched.

Mortal Kombat and the DC Universe have seen a number of animated features released in previous years. DC has had a number of animated movie universes, while Mortal Kombat has had films such as Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s RevengeMortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind, and Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms released.

One connection between the two franchises has been writer Jeremy Adams, who wrote all the Mortal Kombat films listed above. He has also written a number of DC films, including Justice League: Warworld.

In an exclusive interview with Comicbook.com, Adams revealed that the idea of a Mortal Kombat vs DC animated film had been pitched, but Warner Bros. rejected the idea. He further added that he was not sure if Warner Bros. were going to do any more Mortal Kombat animated films:

"“Well, I think at the end of the day, I don’t know if they’re ever going to do any more. I hope they do, and I hope they call me to be involved. That would be great because I really love it. But I don’t know. I don’t know. I think it would be really cool though. Trust me, I would love to see a DC Mortal Kombat. That would be super, super cool.”"

Fans would be disappointed by this news, as the connection between DC and Mortal Kombat has grown through a number of crossovers over the years. This began with 2008’s video game titled Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, which has its own cult following. It saw major DC characters such as Superman, Batman, the Flash and Wonder Woman clash against Mortal Kombat mainstays such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang and Raiden.

While the video game was a one-off full crossover between the two franchises, fans would love to see more. The storyline of an animated adaption may have followed the game’s storyline of the universes clashing and the heroes all teaming up to stop it.

For now, fans of the two franchises will have to make do with the frequent crossovers of characters between games. The Injustice video games have seen characters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden crossover into the DC Universe. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 11 featured the Joker and Mortal Kombat 1 is set to feature John Cena’s Peacemaker.

Only time will tell if the two franchises will have a full crossover in the future. For now, we will have to wait and see.
