Marvel Comics has killed its heroes, and it’s up to Captain America to fight back in Avengers: Twilight, a new story announced by Marvel Comics at New York Comic-Con 2023.

Comic books will always create stories of futures where the heroes lose. Old Man Logan, Wanted (both by Mark Millar), and DC vs. Vampires are only three examples. They aren’t the first and they won’t be the last.

In this story, the heroes didn’t just lose. The U.S. Government was taken out as well. Possibly all of Earth’s governments.

Avengers: Twilight trailer

The trailer for Avengers: Twilight is saddening. First, Steve Rogers is old and the days of Captain America are far behind him. He’s living in a small apartment with nothing but a bed and pictures of a past life. Then, there’s a flashback. Fans get a glimpse into what happened.

The Avengers are attacked by unknown enemies. While some of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes escaped, not all of them were so lucky. Iron Man was among the casualties. It wasn’t just the heroes, the attackers invaded the White House as well. They had the Secret Service on the White House lawn with guns pointed at them. Meanwhile, an unknown person was inside. What they’re doing inside remains to be seen.

According to Marvel.com, Steve Rogers lives in an America where, “freedom is an illusion, where the Avengers are strangers, and his friends are long dead.” If you know Stever Rogers, you’re aware he’s not going to let that stand. It’s also an easy guess that he’s still fighting back against a tyrannical country. How he does that will be interesting. Thankfully, Marvel put a great creative team together.

Avengers: Twilight will be written by Chip Zdarsky who’s fresh off an epic run of Daredevil. He’ll be joined by the amazing Daniel Acuña. Acuña has a way of making scenes look bleak. Considering what’s happening, his style will bring the pages to life. Together, this creative team could create one of the best comic book futures of all time.

Avengers: Twilight debuts in January 2024. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow for more news as it comes out.
