5. Aemond Targaryen

Now we’re getting to some of the most complex Targaryens of the bunch. It’s not surprising many viewers dubbed Aemond a mini-Daemon after getting acquainted with him in House of the Dragon. Aemond is the second son of King Viserys I Targaryen and unlike his older brother Aegon, he actually has an interest in power and politics. Following a tough childhood that saw him being bullied by his family, Aemond completely transforms in adulthood — especially after losing his eye. He plays a significant role in the Dance of the Dragons after killing his nephew Lucerys Velaryon in a dragon duel, which sets up the Civil War.

Aemond is such an interesting character because of the mysterious demeanor he puts on and his skills in combat and as a dragon rider. He steals and is able to ride the late Laena Velaryon’s dragon Vhagar when he’s just a child, which is majorly impressive. His fierce determination and unpredictable nature make him a character worth watching. And though he’s fighting on the wrong side in my opinion, I still can’t help but admire Aemond.

4. Daemon Targaryen

I really wish I could place Daemon Targaryen on this list higher because he’s such an epic character in the Game of Thrones universe, but the truth is I just love the remaining Targaryens on here more! Daemon is such a complicated character, one you root for even though he’s a pretty bad person. We meet him in House of the Dragon as Rhaenrya’s uncle who is skipped over as his brother Viserys’ heir to the Iron Throne. As much as it pains Viserys, he cannot trust Daemon, as he’s impulsive, violent, and unpredictable. He can also be cruel and selfish.

Daemon and Rhaenyra have a strange relationship from the start, which eventually turns romantic. It sometimes can be difficult to figure out whether Daemon only gets close to Rhaenyra to be closer to the crown, but after reading Fire & Blood and watching the first season of House of the Dragon, I do believe that he truly loves her. Even if their relationship might benefit him politically as well.

And while Daemon can certainly be ruthless, he also prioritizes his family and will defend the ones he loves to death. His moral ambiguity makes for a very entertaining character, and actor Matt Smith’s portrayal only helps bring out Daemon’s undeniable charm.

George R.R. Martin has said his favorite Targaryen is Daemon, and I totally understand why.
