Cabin in the Woods

"“Yes, you had zombies. But this is “Zombie Redneck Torture Family,” see? They’re entirely separate species. Like the difference between an elephant and an elephant seal.” -Sitterson"

Last, but certainly not least is this writer’s favorite horror movie, Cabin in the Woods. Do you want to talk about scary movie tropes? This movie has them all. There’s a dumb jock, a bunch of drugs and alcohol use, and even a “don’t go into the basement” moment. That’s not the best part. This movie highlights everything recognizable from horror movies and explains why. Of course, it’s done in jest.

The explanation is that sacrifices must be made to appease elder gods. Meanwhile, the organization keeping the gods happy places bets on how people get killed. To them, this is all a joke (until it isn’t). As the movie progresses you’ll see unicorns, giant snakes, and different kinds of zombies.

BONUS: American Horror Story: 1984

"“Pain is all I’ve ever known. Pain is how the world’s always talked to me. Why shouldn’t pain be the way I talk back?” -Richard Ramirez"

We’re adding in a bonus title to the list to include a TV show because AHS: 1984 is a great horror-comedy. American Horror Story has a lot of spooky seasons, but none of them are as intentionally campy (pun intended) as 1984. Each episode in this series is clearly making fun of slasher flicks. For example, kids are murdered at a summer camp by a mysterious killer has a very Jason Vorhees feel to it.

AHS: 1984 still has the same amazing acting as the other seasons. The difference here is they didn’t have to take themselves too seriously. Billie Lourd shines as Montana Duke. She plays a character with an alluring smile hiding dreadful intentions. Brooke Thomson (played by Emma Roberts) is a kind-hearted protagonist who ends up attacked for something she never did. The best actor in this is easily Leslie Grossman. Her role as Margaret Booth is incredible. She’s an awful human being who gets worse as the show goes on.

American Horror Story: 1984 is an absolutely fun show to binge on Halloween. You could start right around the time the sun sets and end after midnight.
