Marvel costumes banned by SAG-AFTRA: No Marvel costumes allowed for Halloween
By Cody Schultz
Don’t expect to see your favorite actors rocking Marvel costumes this Halloween as the SAG-AFTRA union has banned actors from dressing up as Marvel characters.
One of the best things about Halloween is the chance to see our favorite celebrities getting into the holiday spirit by donning costumes inspired by some of the year’s biggest pop culture figures. Many times, this includes the heroes from Marvel Comics which have given us some truly iconic Halloween looks over the years.
Just last year, Keke Palmer hired a team of talented creatives to bring fans’ dream of her playing Rogue of the X-Men to life as former Batwoman star Javicia Leslie gave fans a taste of what she could look like if cast as Storm with a stunning Halloween costume inspired by the equally iconic X-Men hero.
With Halloween only days away, anticipation has been growing among fans over which actors might don Marvel costumes this Halloween season but alas it seems we won’t be seeing any actors suiting up as Marvel heroes this October 31.
In an unexpected move, the SAG-AFTRA union has banned Marvel costumes this Halloween telling its members not to dress up as heroes from the Marvel franchise due to the fact that Marvel is owned by Disney.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, SAG-AFTRA has informed members that they are not to dress as any character from any struck company this Halloween and to instead “choose costumes inspired by generalized characters and figures — ghost, zombie, spider, etc.”
Why can’t actors wear Marvel costumes this Halloween?
So why exactly can’t actors wear Marvel costumes this Halloween? Well, the answer is simple, doing so would be seen as an act of promoting movies and television projects which actors are not able to currently do due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
While sporting a Marvel costume on Halloween might seem innocent enough, for the union, wearing costumes inspired by characters from the studios would be viewed as a way of promoting the content amid the ongoing actors’ strike. This is why SAG-AFTRA has banned Marvel costumes as well as costumes inspired by other popular franchises including Barbie and Wednesday, among others.
It’s important to note, that this ban only affects members of SAG-AFTRA so there is a chance we could still see other stars sporting costumes inspired by Marvel heroes including musicians and reality TV stars. Fans simply shouldn’t expect to see any actors rocking Marvel-inspired costumes this Halloween due to the SAG-AFTRA ban.
