4 most common Stranger Things complaints that don’t matter (and 3 that do)
By Bryce Olin
There are too many characters and stories
This goes hand-in-hand with the criticism about the main characters being untouchable in Stranger Things. The Duffers have created so many good characters that people care about. The show has ballooned from a little show about a monster, a missing kid, a kid with powers, and friends and family coming together to save them both and stop the monster to an interdimensional feud between small-town kids and one all-powerful monster plus Cold War implications.
Why it matters: While I disagree that the main characters need to be killed off, Stranger Things, particularly the last two seasons, has an issue here. There are too many things going on, and it’s hurting the story. In season 4, the Duffers bit off a bit more than they could chew. Although the season was full of exciting action, it felt so different than the first three seasons. It changed the show entirely. Largely, we could have done without the whole California and Russia storylines. Everyone needed to be back in Hawkins together much, much sooner.
This is, I guess, a blessing in some respects. People care so much about these characters that they are willing to ignore pacing issues and a bloated story to see their favorite characters run side missions that distract, at times, from the main story. I don’t know how or if this issue can be fixed, but I hope the final season has more of a season 1-3 feel and less of a season 4 feel.
