Eleven’s sister episode and trip to Chicago was bad for the show

In Stranger Things season 2, episode 7, “The Lost Sister,”  Eleven took a bus ride down to Chicago to find her sister, Kali, also known as Eight. It’s the most polarizing episode of the series so far. People loved it, while the majority, it seems, hated it and thought it was bad for the show.

Why it doesn’t matter: I understand why people complained about this episode. It didn’t feel like Stranger Things anymore, and it was a break in the middle of the season 2 action. But, I completely disagree that this episode harmed the show in some way. Could it have been better placed or timed? Maybe, but I actually think it makes sense in the overall story.

First of all, we got an extra episode in Stranger Things season 2 thanks to this episode. I’ll never say no to more Stranger Things. In addition, Eleven learns a valuable lesson in this episode. She’s literally with a gang traveling around and killing — yes, killing! — people who worked at the Hawkins National Lab. Eleven is about to kill a dude, but morally, she can’t do it. She’s not a monster! She proves that she’s actually good. To me, that’s an important part of her growth, and that leads to the sacrifices she makes in season 2, season 3, and season 4. She’s already found her family and friends. She doesn’t need this or them.
