Superman is on his way back to the big screen in a new DC movie, but which actor has played the Man of Steel the best over the years?
The Man of Steel has been a regular presence on both TV and movie screens for decades, but he’s been part of the comic book lore for a lot longer. Considered by many to be the first real modern superhero, he flew onto the pages of DC Comics way back in 1938, instantly immortalizing himself in history.
Over time, his legacy would grow, with the character expanding into other mediums, including television, animation, and movies. Television was the first entry into the hero’s lore for many generations, as Superman became a regular of the small screen. However, in 1978, Richard Donner brought him to the big screen in his self-titled adventure – a film that is arguably the first modern day superhero movie.
His story continues to flourish today, with Clark Kent and Lois Lane currently starring in their own critically-acclaimed TV series, and a new big-budget feature film on the way as well – one that will be a major part of the DC Universe’s relaunch. The new Adult Swim animated series My Adventures With Superman has also entertained audiences, showcasing how timeless the character truly is.
James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy will start a new chapter in the Man of Steel’s story, as young actor David Corenswet has been cast in the iconic role. A longtime fan-favorite for the part, fans are ready to see how he embodies the legendary DC superhero.
Before he does, let’s take a look back at the actors who brought both the mild-mannered Clark Kent and his caped counterpart to life. And while we’re at it, let’s rank them.
Note: While many actors have voiced Superman in animated TV shows, movies and video games, this list will feature all of the live-action adaptations and the one animated adaptation that transcended its genre.
