2. Batman Returns

When it comes to amazing Batman movies, Batman Returns is often regarded as one of the best movies in The Dark Knight’s cinematic history. It’s also one of the best sequels to any Batman movie.

Director Tim Burton managed to again use his imaginative vision to successfully build upon the foundation he laid in Batman. Burton has this natural way of using his unique visual style to create a version of Gotham City that remains unlike any we’ve seen on the big screen, one full of complex and iconic characters. So let’s talk about said characters.

First, there was Michael Keaton who returned to reprise his role as Batman, once again delivering a flawless performance that helped to cement his status as the best to ever suit up as The Dark Knight. Then there was the introduction of Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, a role in which Pfeiffer blended complexity and sensuality to create a truly flawless and iconic performance. Rounding out the core characters was Danny DeVito’s grotesque but tragic Penguin who was an incredibly compelling antagonist and the perfect addition to the film’s mix.

With the help of its all-star cast, the movie managed to set itself apart from the crowd by exploring complex themes such as alienation and the duality of human nature. It wasn’t afraid to embrace a darker and more adult-skewed narrative during a time when superheroes were known for being campy.

There are absolutely arguments to be had for why Batman Returns could be deemed the best of the best when it comes to Batman movie sequels. However, there is one movie that narrowly edges it out for the top honor.
