8. Cheetah

In all fairness, Wonder Woman 1984 did provide a fantastic portrayal of an iconic villain. Kristen Wiig delivered an outstanding performance as the supernaturally gifted werecheetah, capable of going head-to-head with the Amazonian Princess. However, the issue with Cheetah lay in the overall script of WW84, which was stretched too thin with numerous plotlines. Cheetah deserved to be the central focus of a movie, as her story was told reasonably but lacked the depth it deserved.

Cheetah’s narrative holds significant importance in Wonder Woman comics. Archaeologist Barbara Ann Minerva stands as a stark contrast to Wonder Woman’s compassion and strength. Her character delves deep into themes of envy, obsession, and the corrupting influence of power. Cheetah’s transformation from friend to foe adds depth to Wonder Woman’s moral compass. She represents the consequences of yielding to one’s darkest desires.

While having her as a secondary villain wasn’t necessarily bad, it failed to establish a substantial connection between her and Wonder Woman. We weren’t taken on a journey through Cheetah’s life, leaving us conflicted when she turned to the dark side. This is regrettable, especially given the excellent casting choice, which both intrigued and made sense. Let’s hope the DCU can rectify this issue in the future.
