7. Cassandra Cain

There’s this negative aura surrounding Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey and I don’t get why. The movie was fun, humorous, and gave Harley Quinn the love she deserved. We saw a story of friendship, growth, and self-discovery. Not to mention the amazing cast including Ewan McGregor’s fanatic portrayal of Black Mask. While people love to complain about a really good movie, the issue was with Cassandra Cain.

No, it wasn’t the fact that she wasn’t some silent assassin. It wasn’t that she was a street smart slick mouth thief. The problem was her backstory or lack thereof. We never got the real history of Casandra Cain which gave comic book fans the ammunition needed to take shots at the character.  It wouldn’t have taken nothing to show who Cassandra’s parents really were.

There should have been some connection between Cassandra and Lady Shiva, whether that’s a post-credit scene or within the story. Instead, we got an orphan who was being haunted down, not by the League of Assassins. Imagine if Black Mask was tasked with finding the kid at the behest of Ra’s Al Ghul. There was something cool about the unique twist to Cassandra. Having that extra depth and connection to the comics would have made it better.
