Alright, readers. We’ve made it to the top two scariest movies according to science. Let’s see if we agree! Movies post-pandemic look a little different, and Host is the perfect example of that. The horror movie was filmed directly over Zoom during the COVID-19 lockdown and it’s one worth checking out if you haven’t already. Host follows a group of friends who jump on video calls during the pandemic to keep sane, and one day they end up participating in a virtual séance.
The ladies begin experiencing unexplained events in their homes and must fight to survive against a potentially evil spirit.
While Host is a very entertaining movie, it’s not all that scary. I’m shocked it made the number two spot! Yes, there are jump scares throughout that will get your heart pumping, and if you aren’t used to horror movies the blood and violence might get to you, but there are far more disturbing titles out there than this one.
Host is suspenseful and will keep you engaged from start to finish, though, so even if it won’t give you nightmares, it’s a solid movie to watch for Halloween.
1. Sinister
- Release Year: 2012
- Director: Scott Derrickson
- Cast: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, Michael Hall D’Addario, Clare Foley, Fred Thompson
- Scare Level, According to Us: 4.5/5
- Where to Watch: Streaming on Hulu + Live TV, FuboTV, available to rent on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV, Google Play Movies & TV, Vudu
In the number one spot is Sinister, which is one I think is pretty frightening. Director Scott Derrickson makes the top 10 list twice, having also helmed The Exorcism of Emily Rose, which is pretty awesome. I’m not going to lie, if I watch this movie with all of the lights out while home alone, I’ll actually get scared. And that’s really saying something!
Sinister is about a family who moves into a new home after the dad, a struggling writer looking for inspiration, learns about murders that took place there. And once he starts to look into it more, he realizes there are home videos of the crimes right there for him to watch. Of course, he watches them late at night when everyone else is asleep, and he notices a dark figure in the background of each of the tapes.
This might not be one of the best horror movies of all time in terms of quality, but it’s enough to get your heart pumping and your stomach turned into knots. There are a few scenes that are genuinely scary, along with great suspense and jump scares throughout to keep you on the edge of your seat. Sinister previously held the number one spot on the list in 2020 and is now back on top!
