5. The Midnight Club
When diving into Mike Flanagan’s deliciously fun horror series, The Midnight Club feels like that experimental dish you’re not quite sure about. It’s got all the ingredients to make it enticing, but somehow the final taste doesn’t hit quite like his other dishes. The show does have a captivating premise and plenty of Flanagan’s signature eerie touches, but it’s perhaps not as gripping, immersive, and terrifying as his other works.
The Midnight Club took us on a moonlit journey, but sometimes even the brightest stars can’t outshine the competition. Based on Christopher Pike’s beloved novel, the show had excellent source material to work with, yet it faced stiff competition from Flanagan’s other Netflix mini-series. Some fans pointed out that while the narrative was intriguing, it lacked the suspense that has become the Flanagan hallmark. Also, compared to the intricacies of his other series, The Midnight Club might have seemed a tad more straightforward in its storytelling – which can sometimes take away from the fun of the story and its twists.
That’s not to say it didn’t have its merits, though. Flanagan managed to get some truly heartfelt moments in amidst the supernatural drama. And the ensemble cast brought a fresh, youthful energy to the screen, while still keeping some of the same cast he’s trusted to make his shows come to life. But in the grand league of Flanagan’s Netflix achievements, The Midnight Club finds itself at the fifth spot.
