4. Midnight Mass

Flanagan’s Midnight Mass took us on a trip to the isolated island of Crockett, where mysteries unfolded and dark secrets came to life.

The series, while dripping with the classic Flanagan suspense we have all come to love and crave, had its moments of profound reflection on faith, community, and redemption. It’s worth noting that the atmospheric tension was undoubtedly palpable, and the character-driven narrative showcased Flanagan’s knack for always picking themes that dive deep into the human mind, emotions, and condition.

Keeping some of the same cast Flanagan has relied on to bring his vision to life, seeing Kate Siegel (who’s Flanagan’s wife and bestie), Zach Gilford, Carla Gugino, Rahul Kohli, Samantha Sloyan, Henry Thomas, and others play different characters in the same universe we’ve all come to love was just as exciting as always. It’s a huge nod to not just Flanagan’s scripts being so damn good and to these amazingly talented actors’ skills – though they’re familiar with his work, their characters are never the same.

Now, you might be wondering why it ranks in the fourth spot on this list. While Midnight Mass delivered a plethora of chilling moments, it is incredibly slower-paced when compared to his other works – I have to admit that it took me a few times to finish some episodes as I kept falling asleep. Also, when stacked against the monumental success and reception of shows like The Haunting of Hill House, it too faced stiff competition. Nonetheless, ranking fourth doesn’t dim its brilliance.
