31. The Flash season 8

The Flash season 8 started off so well. It really seemed like it was set to be the long overdue comeback that fans had been waiting for – the reason being its excellent “Armageddon” crossover. A major event that brought in multiple Arrowverse heroes, it took place across the first five episodes of the season and saw Barry tackle the alien known as Despero, struggle with a loss he couldn’t remember and question The Flash’s position as a hero. He also got his amazing gold boots.

Unfortunately, when everything went back to normal, everything really went back to normal. We were left with a confusing Time Sickness storyline that saw Iris once again relegated to damsel-in-distress, there were more unnecessarily time-wasting “interlude” episodes, and the show randomly decided to kill off Killer Frost for no reason whatsoever when there were far less interesting characters still on the show.

The Deathstorm storyline was really interesting, and the return of Eobard Thawne as a good man was a nostalgic and welcome change-of-pace, but just like the pivot from its Armageddon storyline, the show just couldn’t maintain the standard. Too many questionable story decisions (and interludes) prevented this season from living up to its potential. And that’s a shame, because if we were just ranking “Armageddon”, season 8 would be an instant Top 10.
