30. The Flash season 5

The biggest issue that The Flash encountered in its fifth season was its repetitive storytelling. There was no clearer example of that than its primary villain, Cicada, who underwent the same cycle of defeat-escape-retreat in almost every single episode he appeared in. He was portrayed to be some unstoppable threat, and yet Team Flash almost defeated him in every battle, until a ton of plot armor allowed him to escape again.

The underwhelming villain wasn’t the only one to suffer from this, however, as the admittedly lovable Nora West-Allen embarked on a similar character journey in her early episodes, running into danger, failing to listen to her more experienced father, and consistently making the same mistakes on a loop. Like we said: Repetitive.

Season 5 was all about family and that was definitely its strength, but it failed to capitalize on the abundance of potential in its storyline, its villains, and its characters. That said, there were plenty of wonderful bright spots in this season, including the remarkably fun “King Shark vs. Gorilla Grodd” episode and the incredible season finale, which saw the return of the Scarlet Speedster’s archenemy, the Reverse-Flash.

This season had a lot going for it, but again, there were just too many episodes.
