8. The Undertaker vs. Batista – WWE SmackDown (April 18, 2008)

The fact that you could get a matchup the caliber of The Undertaker and Batista on a random episode of SmackDown says all you need to know about the level of talent and strength of writing of WWE during the late 2000s. What a time it was to be alive, and what a time it was in early 2008, knowing that the two men who delivered five of 2007’s greatest matches would get to square off against each other once again.

The story here was that SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero was trying to weaken World Heavyweight Champion The Undertaker so that her boyfriend Edge could reclaim the title when the pair clashed at Backlash. To do that, she put him in a match against his old rival Batista.

The giddiness we all felt about the prospect of seeing these two men renew their rivalry on the blue brand was real. And the moment that they started trading blows, that groove they had found the year prior quickly returned.

The reason that this one is coming last in our list is simply down to the fact that it never really got to get going because it was all about the shenanigans going on outside. Edge was in the audience, attempting to get in ‘Taker’s head, but it only resulted in The Phenom and The Animal teaming up to take him and his cronies down (ending the match in the process).

Thankfully, we’d get a rematch the very next week. More on that later…
