Ray Palmer and Kendra Saunders

Show: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

Legends of Tomorrow did a lot of things right throughout its wacky run, but it did stumble a few times when it first came out of the gate. One of its biggest issues was its portrayal of both Hawkgirl and Hawkman, who just didn’t live up to their comic book counterparts. The former, in particular, never got the storylines she deserved.

Kendra Saunders was initially a love interest for Cisco Ramon on The Flash. That is, until she discovered she was an ancient hawk-being destined to die so that stalker Vandal Savage could live. It all led her to taking a trip on the Waverider with the Legends, and an eventual romance with Ray Palmer.

Now, there is no denying that Ray and Kendra were incredibly cute together. The chemistry was there, and Brandon Routh and Ciara Renee were a delight on-screen. Heck, the episode they spent stranded in the 1950s was excellent. Unfortunately, it all just felt really pointless.

Kendra was destined to be with Carter Hall, a.k.a. Hawkman, as she remembered her love for him every time she “woke up”, and the pair were on the run from Savage (who also claimed to love her in his own twisted way). Between that, the fact that Ray and Jax were also competing for her affections, and her introduction as a love interest for Cisco, it just felt like there should have been more there for the iconic Hawkgirl.

Ray and Kendra were an enjoyable pairing, but one that was over before it started. It didn’t need to happen, and by the time the Hawks departed in the season 1 finale, it was essentially forgotten.

Verdict: WORST
