John Diggle and Lyla Michaels

Show: Arrow

Rarely will you find a couple that functions as well on television as this one. John Diggle had a few romantic interests throughout his time in the Arrowverse but none compared to Lyla Michaels. The two were former partners who had gone their separate ways and yet remained in touch (as Lyla’s position at A.R.G.U.S. made her a reliable friend whenever Diggle needed help). We only needed one scene between them to see that there was chemistry, because it was there in spades.

The reason Diggle and Lyla worked so well together was the history. They had a solid foundation that set them up from the get-go, and one that they could pull from whenever Arrow needed to evolve their relationship. This is particularly impressive as most of that history didn’t play out on-screen (as it all took place before the show started), but it is a testament to the strength of writing for the pair and the chemistry between actors David Ramsey and Audrey Marie Anderson.

They were equals; incredibly strong characters who functioned well independently and yet flourished when together. That strong foundation set them up nicely for whenever the pair did begin to fall for each other all over again. And as a major fan of their partnership, it was incredibly rewarding to see them find happiness in each other, eventually get their work/balance right, and start a beautiful family.
