Umbrella Academy season 4 finally has a release date

The Umbrella Academy has proven itself as one of the best shows in the comic book and superhero genre. It has been a thrill-ride since the get-go, making us all feel a rollercoaster of emotions with each of its seasons.

The show premiered on Netflix in 2019 and achieved huge levels of success, gifting the streamer with one of its biggest success stories of the year. It has since returned for second and third seasons, with a fourth one on the way.

By the end of The Umbrella Academy season 3, our heads were absolutely spinning. We got the best dance scene in a sci-fi show history ever, some confusing plot points, lots of family drama, and our favorite group of dysfunctional siblings finding a way to reset the universe, just to discover the daddies of all daddies, Reginald Hargreeves, manipulated them into helping him achieve his goal.

While we wait for the show to return, let’s take a look at what we know about The Umbrella Academy season 4.

The Umbrella Academy’s fourth season is its last

First off, can we all just take a moment to sob uncontrollably? This upcoming fourth season of The Umbrella Academy is also the final season. This was confirmed last summer along with its renewal by Netflix – an announcement which came shortly after the release of the third season.

The show is still among Netflix’s most popular original series, so it sounds like the decision to end the series with season 4 was a creative one. This is also clear from the statement released by creator and showrunner Steve Blackman, who said:

"“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago. But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”"

The end of The Umbrella Academy will bring about the end of another hero for the superhero genre as it becomes one of the many shows to announce its conclusion in recent years. But hey, we all knew this superhero family drama had to close its umbrella at some point before it became one of those shows that go on for too long, right?

We have no doubt that it will go out on the highest of highs.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 is coming out in August 2024

After months of speculation, Netflix finally confirmed that the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy will premiere on August 8th, 2024. Fans were hoping that it might have arrived before the end of 2023 as it had wrapped filming in late May (prior to when the actors went on strike), so there was the chance that the streamer might have opted to release it as it waited for new content as the strike continued, but that’s not what happened.

But, hey - we've got a date! Which could always change, but I am very confident that it won't.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 teaser promises best season yet

While Netflix has yet to release an official full-length trailer to showcase the upcoming final season of The Umbrella Academy, it did unveil a new teaser. That teaser features the cast of the show – intercut with clips of them during table reads of season 4 – as they discuss what fans can expect from the final season.

It’s all very non-spoiler, of course, as the cast wouldn’t want to spoil it for fans, but you can see that Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Justin H. Min, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Lila Pitts are excited about what’s to come.

This is just the beginning of the promo train for the show’s fourth and final season, so it’s likely that we aren’t far off from the official trailer, which will undoubtedly reveal new footage and give us more of an idea of what we can all expect from the new season. Needless to say, after seeing the cast talk about the new season, we can’t wait to see what’s next for the Hargreaves family.

How many episodes are in season 4?

In a move that grinds my gears as platforms continuously do this to us, only six episodes await us for The Umbrella Academy season 4. It’s certainly unfortunate as the show normally features a much greater number of episodes in each of its outings, with all three of the previous seasons featuring 10 episodes each.

That being said, The Umbrella Academy has proven that less is more (as its 10-episode seasons are generally shorter than the typical 13 -22 episode seasons of other shows), so we have no doubt that it will once again do the same here. There might be less episodes to enjoy, but it will undoubtedly make the most of each one them.

On top of all, showrunner Steve Blackman dropped the title of the premiere episode as “The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want,” and the series finale will be called “The End of the Beginning.” Ha. Fantastic.

What could be the plot for The Umbrella Academy’s final season?

While Netflix has yet to make any revelations about what audiences can expect in the final season of The Umbrella Academy, there are a number of plot points we should be ready to see rear their heads in season 4.

All we have to go on are breadcrumbs, my friends. But, based on how season 3 ended, we can expect some fun and exciting action and family drama before it’s all over, including:

• Ben is back…or is he?
• Reginald’s late wife Abigail could make a comeback.
• Remember Sloane? Where the heck did she go?
• And then there’s Allison and her timey-wimey husband Ray. How did he jump through time?!
• Plus, some sort of world-ending event because we’re talking about The Umbrella Academy and that’s just how the show works.

Remember, this won’t just be another installment of the Hargreaves siblings adventures, it will also be tasked with wrapping up the whole story. With that in mind, we should expect to see the culmination of the show’s long-running storylines as well, as Steve Blackman and the writing team will look to produce a satisfying conclusion for the beloved show.

We’ll get to see some fresh faces joining the cast, too. Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, and David Cross are are among the new additions, and they will be starring as Drs. Gene and Jean Thibedeau, who apparently suffer from insane déjà vu. David Cross will be playing Sy Grossman, a dad desperate to reconnect with his estranged daughter.
