26. Batman and Harley Quinn

Batman and Harley Quinn was a real event whenever it was released – and that’s not just because it had a limited theatrical release! The movie was drawn and animated in a variation of the styles of Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures, with some of the DC Animated Universe voice cast reprising their roles, such as Kevin Conroy and Loren Lester. However, it wasn’t quite the return of the DCAU fans had been hoping for.

For starters, it feels a little derivative of the Batman episode “Harlequinade” (except Harley is now helping the Dynamic Duo take down Poison Ivy instead of The Joker). The real issue, however, lies in its unexpectedly mature tone. With raunchy one-liners, suggestive content, and adult humor, Batman and Harley Quinn felt more like a backdoor pilot for the Harley Quinn animated series than a nostalgic trip back into the DCAU. There’s nothing wrong with that, but did we need the classic style for a story that clearly wasn’t set in this continuity?

That being said, the movie is an adventure that spotlights one of the DCAU’s greatest creations: Harley Quinn. It’s also a lot of fun that is really sold by its exquisite voice cast, and it’s guaranteed to have you belting out “Don’t Pull Your Love” and “Hanging on the Telephone” for days afterwards.
