6. “Space Seed” (Season 1, Episode 22)

“Space Seed” is known for introducing one of the most iconic villains in the franchise’s history: Khan Noonien Singh. In this episode, the Enterprise crew discovers an abandoned ship, the SS Botany Bay, drifting around in space. Once aboard, they find Khan – a genetically enhanced superhuman from the 20th century – and his band of followers in a hibernating sleep.

The charismatic and cunning Khan, brilliantly portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán, quickly captivates the audience with his imposing presence and complex character. As the crew revives Khan and his group, tensions escalate aboard the Enterprise, leading to an intense confrontation between Captain Kirk and Khan.

What makes “Space Seed” one of the best episodes of the original series is not just the introduction of a memorable villain, but also its exploration of themes like the danger of unchecked power and the ethical implications of genetic engineering. The episode masterfully blends action, drama, and science fiction elements, showcasing the series’ ability to tackle thought-provoking topics while still giving us the engaging stories it’s known for.

The dynamic between Kirk and Khan is particularly compelling, highlighting Kirk’s leadership and moral compass against Khan’s ambition and ruthlessness. The episode’s lasting impact has a direct connection to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, one of the most acclaimed films in the Star Trek series. “Space Seed” sets the stage for this movie, adding layers to Khan’s character and enriching the Star Trek universe.

Also, fun fact: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh is a direct descendant of Mister Khan.
