8. TWD went on too long

The Walking Dead was nothing short of a phenomenon. It enjoyed an incredibly successful run as a result, running for 11 straight seasons on AMC between 2010 and 2022. That’s an appropriately lengthy run for such a successful show, and it really does go to show how enduring it was.

That being said, it went on a little too long. It was absolutely warranted a lengthy run, but 11 seasons was just a bit too much. Not because it shouldn’t have gone on that long, but because the standard of the show significantly declined over the years, with some of the seasons in the second half of its run paling in comparison to those in the first half.

Now, every show has lacklustre seasons. That doesn’t mean they can’t bounce back from them. In favor of TWD, it did just that; with its ninth season making up for the dark days of seasons 6, 7, and 8. But as those three consecutive disappointing seasons highlight, this was more than just lacklustre seasons. The Walking Dead went round in circles over the course of its second half, and viewers began tuning out. The rot had set in and things would never be the same again.

Yes, it stood the test of time, but it bore the wounds of that war. As successful as the show continued to be for AMC, it still went out on a much quieter note because it stuck around longer than it should have.

Speaking of that…
