DC has found it’s new Lex Luthor and more for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, but are they the right choices?

So far, the casting news for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy has been promising. David Corenswet (Pearl) and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) were brought in to play Superman and Lois Lane. Those two are of course the most important roles in the movie.

Other characters joining the fray will include Mister Terrific (played by Edi Gathegi), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). These aren’t roles you’d necessarily think of when casting a Superman movie. Nevertheless, they were all good picks. Adding little-known heroes and villains to an anticipated project brings light to the main characters.

Recently, James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie continued the trend of making smart additions. Lex Luthor, The Engineer, Jimmy Olsen and Miss Eve Teschmacher were all added to Superman: Legacy. On top of that, they were brilliantly cast.

Superman: Legacy’s newest additions

First, we have Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) who has the difficult task of playing infamous DC villain Lex Luthor. It’s difficult because he’ll be under a microscope. Anyone who plays Luthor will be judged harshly. Hoult will be no different. Thankfully, his track record shows he’ll be up for the challenge.

Next is María Gabriela de Faría (The Exorcism of God), who joins as The Engineer. While The Engineer isn’t a character a novice comic book fan knows, she still has a tough job. She has to give people a reason to care about The Engineer. If she does well, the character could become a sensation and would likely be in more projects. James Gunn made Peacemaker a hit. He can do it for The Engineer as well.

Lastly, we come to Skyler Gisondo who’s playing Jimmy Olsen. People often overlook how important Jimmy Olsen is. He’s one of Clark and Lois’ closest friends and has a long history with the duo in their public and private lives. Plus, if there’s a Dailey Planet, there should be a Jimmy Olsen.

Gisondo could be the best addition to Superman Legacy.  He’s shown a very Jimmy Olsen personality in Righteous Gemstones and Santa Clarita Diet. Sometimes he’s meek and soft-spoken. Then, he’ll come out of nowhere and loudly save the day (like destroying things with a monster truck).

Another casting addition announced for the film is Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher. Often referred to as “Miss Teschmacher”, the character is known for being Lex Luthor’s secretary and potential love interest. She made her first appearance in the first two Superman movies, and later appeared in The CW’s Supergirl. We can’t wait to see Sara Sampaio bring her back to screens.

It’s doubtful that these are the last of the roles for DC’s Superman: Legacy. Some of them will be surprises. Others will be front-page news.

Regardless, stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to see what’s next.
