10. Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage

Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage originally launched to mixed reception back in 1994. However, as time passed, people started to see the game for what it really is: an amazing beat ’em up that was a great adaptation of a beloved Venom and Carnage story.

Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage allows us to control our friendly neighborhood hero and even the Lethal Protector himself. Both protagonists have the dreadful task of traversing through the streets of New York City while attempting to take down Carnage’s forces on their own. Most levels are filled with different goons and bosses (such as the terrifying Doppelganger) for players to beat. However, there are also a few sections where Spidey would need to crawl through buildings and use his webs to swing and avoid attacks, allowing for some gameplay variety along the way.

The game has a great number of Marvel heroes present throughout its story, such as Captain America, Cloack and Dager, and Firestar, making it clear it takes part in a greater superhero world. It was always a joy (and a big surprise) to see how other heroes would suddenly appear at different times of the story to help the wall-crawler. Finally, there were also a great number of secret rooms hidden for players to find scattered across its many levels. If you happened to come across one of those, you’d find helpful items as rewards such as lives (and believe me: lives are insanely helpful here).

On the downside, Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage was maybe a little too hard for its own good. While nowadays there are some amazing unforgiving video games (such as Bloodborne or Elden Ring) they usually have a great level design, and that wasn’t always the case for Spidey’s NES adventure. Besides, the game was too short for players to complete, and it also was very similar to other beat ’em ups of its era. Nonetheless, those negatives aren’t enough to take away its place as one of the top 10 Spider-Man video games ever created.
