There’s been some talk about a new Star Trek installment coming up in the near future. Here’s all we know about it so far about Star Trek 4.

Space: the final frontier.

These words have whisked us away on countless adventures among the stars, but guess what, my fellow Star Trek fans? There’s chatter in the cosmos about a new Star Trek movie, and it’s time to strap in and prepare for warp speed.

The world of Star Trek is so much more than just ships and alien races. Even my own sister, who does not partake much in the nerdy and geeky side of life, knows what it is and all major sayings. It’s a cultural touchstone and icon that has inspired generations. It’s about the human condition and how it affects others, exploration, diversity, and hope. This new movie wouldn’t be just another space adventure – it’d be a beacon for what we can achieve when we dream about the future.

These lovely whispers started in the most expected place: social media. Whether it’d be interviews with screenwriter Lindsey Anderson Beer where she says the script is ready, posts and comments from cast members, cryptic tweets from writers, and a few breadcrumbs dropped by the big bosses at Paramount – the buzz is loud enough for it to be as annoying as a mosquito evading your slap. And, of course, where there’s buzzing, there’s probably something coming up, so I did a little digging.

Before we set our phasers to “excited” and start dusting off those Starfleet uniforms we all wear to conventions, let’s take a look at what we’ve heard so far about this potential new installment.

The original cast is coming back

Curious as to who we will find on the bridge this time? While we don’t have many confirmed names at all, the rumor is that we might see a mix of familiar faces and fresh blood. Could we be looking at a collaboration of characters from different Star Trek eras, with iconic actors who brought legendary characters to life acting next to their younger selves? While we’re very not sure at all what to expect, JJ Abrams has made my heart skip a few times talking about the script and how much he likes the storyline they’ve come up for it so far.

There was speculation about Chris Pine reprising his role as James T. Kirk Thankfully, it looks like Pine is returning, bringing back the

charm, and leadership that define Kirk. Pine’s been busy since his last Star Trek venture, dabbling in various genres, but his return to the bridge of the Enterprise is eagerly awaited.

The rest of the original cast, consisting of Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg are also in talks to return, adding to the excitement.

A director is still needed, but we have our producer for Star Trek 4

While JJ Abrams will produce Star Trek 4, he won’t direct it, continuing his role as executive producer from Star Trek Beyond. The director’s chair, previously expected to be filled by WandaVision director Matt Shakman, is now vacant due to Shakman’s commitment to Marvel’s Fantastic Four.

While there has been no update on who will be directing the movie, we hope to hear something soon as the strikes end and movie productions kick back into gear.

As you can expect, plot details are guarded more fiercely than the secrets of the Borg, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating and daydreaming about it. Some hope we might journey into a previously unexplored sector of the Star Trek universe. Others want a time-travel escapade much like in Star Trek: Discovery, with that nostalgic charm and modern twist. Whatever it is, I’m here for the space-time anomalies and the moral dilemmas.

A change in Paramount’s release schedule

Despite the buzz, the movie has faced its share of turbulence – which was only made worse by the writers and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Originally set for a December 2023 release, Star Trek 4 has been temporarily removed from Paramount’s release schedule as of September 2022, leaving fans all in suspense. There hasn’t been a release date update or much of an update at all as the movie was indefinitely pushed back, but we eagerly await more information as it comes.

While we wait for official news, let’s not forget that Star Trek has always been about the journey. The speculations, the hopes, the fan theories; they’re all part of the excitement. And no matter what the new movie brings, it’s sure to be a voyage we’ll take together, as one global crew of Trekkies.

Whether you’re a Starfleet veteran or a newbie to the universe, this potential new Star Trek movie is shaping up to be a ride we wouldn’t want to miss.
