22. Carl Fredricksen

"“This is crazy. I finally meet my childhood hero and he’s trying to kill us. What a joke.” -Carl Fredricksen"

Some Disney movies will hit you in the heart with sad moments. None of them like Up.  Carl Fredricksen lost his wife, he and his wife couldn’t have kids, and she died before they could go on a real vacation. After all of that, he lived in an area that caused discomfort and was forced out of his house. So, he packed up his stuff and left.

Anyone who’s been through what Carl Fredricksen has can understand why he became such a curmudgeon. Yet, he didn’t let it keep him down (literally and figuratively). He was kicked out of his home, so he took it away. Then he meets a boy and a dog who annoys him beyond anything he is ready to deal with. However, he found a way to reopen his heart to love people again.

This is why Carl is great. No matter how many times life handed him lemons, Carl made the best lemonade possible.

21. Belle

"“Well, some people use their imagination.” -Belle"

Belle had a lot of similarities with the original Disney Princesses. However, she was smarter than most of them. In a time when being a smart woman was looked down on, Belle wanted to learn. She read books that other people wouldn’t, absorbed the knowledge, and couldn’t wait to start the process again.

Another admirable quality is the way she spoke her mind. Belle refused to be Gaston’s arm candy. She knew that being with him would be the end of her life. Maybe not literally, but it would have been the death of her education. To her, stifling who she is would have been a worse fate.
