50 greatest Disney characters of all-time ranked
By Mark Lynch
10. Maleficent
"“Before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel, and fall into a sleep like death! A sleep from which she will *never* awaken!” -Maleficent"
Either version of Maleficent is a winner. The animated version was evil. Maleficent shows up with flair, taunts the people in attendance, and puts a curse on a baby. Years later, she captures the one person who can break the curse. Not only was she not playing fair, but she took pieces off the chessboard to give herself an advantage.
On the other side, we have a retelling of Maleficent’s story. She wasn’t bad. Maleficent was betrayed and decided to get even with the person who wronged her. When she met the princess she cursed, she loved her like a daughter. Eventually, Maleficent felt bad about what she did and made up for it. The irony is the kiss that broke the curse came from the same person who executed it.
9. Ursula
"“Life’s full of tough choices, isn’t it?” -Ursula"
Here we go with another villain with a need for vengeance. Ursula wanted to rule and was willing to do anything to get what she wanted. This includes using King Triton’s daughter as a bargaining chip. The difference here is a debate can be made that Ursula didn’t do anything wrong.
The one thing that people don’t mention is Ariel wasn’t forced into this deal. Ursula just happened to be smarter than her. Was she conniving and wicked? She certainly was. Be that as it may, people should check the contract before signing.
Ursula didn’t get a lot of screen time in either movie, but that didn’t matter. She remains one of the most popular and well-loved characters of all time. Her not being in the films often just adds to her greatness.
