8. Moana

"“Okay, first, I’m not a princess, I’m the daughter of the chief.” -Moana"

No one should be surprised that Moana is ranked as the best princess on this list. As you can see from the quote above, she’s more than that. Disney made it a point to change the idea of princesses. They no longer needed saving from a prince or parent. Years later, Moana became the personification of this and more.

Even after the princesses became more independent, their parents remained skeptical of their decisions. Not that Moana didn’t have her parental obstacles. Her father forbids her to leave the reef. The difference here is her father wasn’t trying to marry her off and trusted her to be the new chief. Most of the princesses didn’t have this kind of support.

When it came down to saving the day, Moana didn’t need to fight. In the face of danger, she won the day with compassion and understanding. She bravely walked towards an angry and lava-spewing Te Fiti and returned her heart. This shows that sometimes you don’t need an epic battle for a conclusion to save the day.

It doesn’t end there. Moana also helped Maui regain his abilities and his confidence and learn to get over himself. At first, the demi-god proclaimed he was the great Maui and didn’t need anyone. He quickly realized that he couldn’t become who he once was on his own. That’s all thanks to Disney’s best princess and future chief.
