50 greatest Disney characters of all-time ranked
By Mark Lynch
7. Scar
"“Temper, temper. I wouldn’t dream of challenging you. Well, as far as brains go, I got the lion’s share. But when it comes to brute strength, I’m afraid I’m at the shallow end of the gene pool.” -Scar"
Scar knew exactly who he was. He was aware that he couldn’t take over the pride by force. The only lions he could overpower were the cubs. Even then, he seemed too lazy to attempt that. What he had above everyone else were his manipulative words.
Lions and hyenas are natural enemies, yet Scar made them his allies. Within them, he saw a group that he could control. All he had to do was promise them all they could eat. And try as he might, he knew he couldn’t directly fool Mufasa, but he knew his weak spot. Instead of going at him directly, he used his son. As we saw, it worked out. For a little while at least.
6. Jafar
"“This is not done yet, boy!” -Jafar"
If anyone said that Jafar was the greatest villain of all time, this writer wouldn’t debate that. Like Scar, Jafar wasn’t physically intimidating, but highly intelligent. He learned mystical abilities and used them to gain the trust of the sultan. The problem was he wasn’t content with being just an advisor. He wanted to rule. If the sorcerer wasn’t blinded by revenge, he would have succeeded. Instead, he didn’t kill Aladdin. He arrogantly sent him away.
Beyond the first Aladdin, Jafar was part of something rare. He helped make a Disney sequel fun. For a while, the straight-to-video/DVD movies were unwatchable. That changed with Aladdin 2: The Return of Jafar. That started the momentum of Disney putting more effort into their sequels and trilogies. It wouldn’t have been possible without Jafar.
