2. Fiona Goode

Season: American Horror Story: Coven

Fiona Goode: Style icon, one-liner queen, Supreme.

Those are just three of the words we can use to describe the awe-inspiring larger-than-life character that Jessica Lange portrayed in the third season of the show. The Supreme of a coven of witches, Fiona Goode didn’t need magic to captivate you, because as soon as she stepped out of that car wearing all black or walked across the streets of New Orleans with her umbrella and shades, she had your full attention.

Now this was a rich character. Fiona loved the power and success that came with being the Supreme and she didn’t want to give that up. But when things had come full-circle, the youth and vitality that came with the role abandoned her for a new Supreme, leaving her fragile, ill and dying. But she was determined to find out who her successor was so that she could kill them and rule for another generation, only to discover that it was her own daughter Cordelia, with whom she had a troubled relationship.

Fiona Goode was perfectly imperfect, a victim of her own hubris, and one of the most compelling characters to ever appear on TV. Lange’s Emmy-winning turn here was largely responsible for that, because when all was said and done, she is after all The Supreme.
