Swamp Thing

Seasons: 1

I still remember the day I read that Swamp Thing was cancelled. It came just shortly after I heard how successful the premiere episode was, and how excited everyone was for the remainder of the series. What a way to take the wind out of its own momentum.

The DC Universe streaming service gave Warner Bros. the chance to try something different with DC TV content. That showed in its choices, from the gritty Titans to the light-hearted StargirlSwamp Thing was a welcome part of that evolution, and its premiere episode was the perfect example of that as it teased a journey into the horror genre – something comic book and superhero properties rarely venture into.

That first season of Swamp Thing is perfection. From the quality of the writing and performances to the incredible make-up and visual effects used to bring Swamp Thing to life, it’s everything you could want from an adaptation of the legendary comic book character (and the upcoming movie is going to have its work cut out for it if it wants to become the definitive adaptation). Although its single season kind of works as a limited series, this show should never have been cancelled – especially as its performance was never even a factor in that decision.

Verdict: Cancelled too soon
