Following the exit of – Destin Daniel Cretton – from the director’s chair on the fifth entry to the franchise of Marvel’s super group Avengers: The Kang Dynasty there is news on Shang-Chi 2.

Movieweb has reported that Short Term 12 and Just Mercy filmmaker, Destin Daniel Cretton, momentarily after stepping down from directing yet another chapter featuring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, revealed a promising development in the sequel to the 2021 Marvel Studios film – Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

As stated in The Hollywood Reporter, Cretton who had been tapped by the studio that spawned the dynamic and colorful library of larger-than-life characters from the House of Ideas to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty last year pivoted to focus on Shang-Chi 2. He is also contractually obligated to executive produce and direct with Hulu’s Onyx Collective a Wonder Man series per his production banner – Family Owned – for Disney+ per Marvel Studios’ “Spotlight”.

According to THR, the main reason why Cretton left his position as director for The Kang Dynasty was because the release date for the ensemble film had been pushed back from May 2025 to May 2026. As of this moment, there has been no information released to fans or trades regarding the first draft of the Kang-Tastic story by Jeff Loveness.

With Jonathan Majors facing an alleged assault and harassment charge and due to attend trial on November 29, there are mixed reactions as to what Marvel will do given the circumstances. Walt Disney Studios, the production company, has taken measures with respect to writing talent.

Not much is known about Shang-Chi 2 except for the fact that its lead actor, Simu Liu, mentioned in July that the movie will be released after Avengers 5. It is hoped that the filmmakers will have more resources at their disposal for the sequel. It is unclear at this time whether Andrew Lanham, who frequently collaborates with director Destin Daniel Cretton, co-wrote the script for the first film with him and if Dave Callaham will be returning to assist with the screenplay, possibly later in the development process.
