19. Terminator: Dark Fate

It’s always an interesting discussion when Terminator: Dark Fate gets brought up. The film is one of the only Terminator sequels to understand the tone of the first two movies, but it’s also the only one that completely misunderstood the heart of the franchise.

While bringing back both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton was met with acclaim from fans hoping for some old school badassery, the shocking decision to kill off John Connor and replace the nuanced protagonist of the franchise with bland new characters understandably didn’t go down well. And that makes Dark Fate a hard movie to rank on any list, because there is so much good in it, but it all has to hinge on getting over the fact that arguably desecrates the Terminator legacy.

If you can do that, you’re in for a movie that at least feels like a Terminator movie of old (save for some dodgy dialogue). While Mackenzie Davis and Natalia Reyes held their own as the new characters, Linda Hamilton stole the show, carrying the bulk of the movie with her gritty performance as the legendary Sarah Connor. And once he finally got on-screen, Schwarzenegger delivered in his greatest role one more time.
