6. Red Heat

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s step towards comedy didn’t begin with one of his laugh-a-minute solo outings or even the hilarious Twins, it actually kicked off with the incredibly underrated buddy comedy action thriller Red Heat.

While the actor’s performances in his other comedy outings are ridiculously over the top, he dials it back for Red Heat, playing the role incredibly straight – and that’s what makes it so good. His character, Ivan Danko, is a Russian policeman who has tracked his archenemy, a drug kingpin who killed his former partner, to the US. There, he crosses paths with a Chicago PD detective, played by Jim Belushi, who is the movie’s more over-the-top character. The two don’t get along and the contrast is perfect.

Red Heat may be the most underrated movie of Arnold’s career. It was well-received and performed well at the box office, but it never quite achieved the adoration or attention that Schwarzenegger’s next movie Twins garnered. The buddy cop element made it an entertaining watch, as he and Belushi worked so incredibly well together, while its strong script makes for an ambitious thrill-ride.

I hadn’t heard much about this movie when I first watched it, and that meant I got to experience all of it for the first time when I did. What a ride that was.
