The Last of Us

The Last of Us season 2 is in a very similar predicament to Stranger Things. It will return to TV screens in the future, but the larger-than-life production will require more time to come to fruition, so it won’t be making its presence felt next year.

This is something that HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed at a New York event in November, revealing that the show’s second season will begin production in early 2024 with a planned 2025 release date in mind.

There’s a lot to factor in to why The Last of Us never commenced production on season 2 this year. First thing’s first, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes understandably resulted in production delays for the vast majority of TV shows and movies. However, Pedro Pascal is also one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood right now, especially as he also plays the title character in The Mandalorian, so it was always going to be unlikely that season 2 would start filming so close to season 1’s arrival.

Nevertheless, the fact that filming will begin soon is very exciting, as it means that we will get updates throughout the year. Heck, we might even get a more specific release window before the year is out. The only certainty right now is that it won’t be returning in 2024.
