Avatar 3
Disney might have been able to rely upon the Avatar franchise to help boost its theatrical box office earnings in both 2022 and 2023, but the studio won’t be as lucky in 2024.
While the initial plan was to release Avatar 3 in December 2024, the third film in James Cameron’s billion-dollar franchise has been shifted back a year to December 19, 2025. This has created a domino effect with the fourth film being pushed back to December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 being delayed to December 19, 2031. Yes, we said 2031!
Honestly, fans should be happy that Avatar 3 wasn’t delayed longer than a year. Filming on the third film was mostly complete before the strikes caused Hollywood to shut down which is what will allow Disney to only delay the movie’s release by a year. Interestingly, Cameron has also previously said parts of the fourth and fifth movies have also been filmed as well so clearly the franchise is moving in the right direction.
Dropping the third film in the franchise before Christmas 2025 is sure to lead Disney to another major win at the box office as the extended wait between movies is sure to create more buzz. We know audiences will be seated when the next entry hits theaters and Disney is definitely counting on that!
