Madame Web

Sony’s recent history with Marvel movies is interesting, to say the least. While the studio has been enjoying a great deal of success with the Venom franchise, those movies benefit from the fact that Venom is a well-established Spider-Man character that mainstream audiences are familiar with (and that Tom Hardy is a well-established action hero). Even with their poor critical reception, they are inherently fun movies that the fans have enjoyed.

None of the above can be said for Morbius, which was poorly received by fans and critics in spite of some initial excitement over it. Jared Leto looked to be a solid casting in the role and there was some buzz leading up to its release, but it still underperformed. It wasn’t a huge failure or anything, but it also wasn’t the success Sony hoped it would be. And it was another question mark revolving around their attempt to build a whole universe of Spider-Man characters set in an apparent alternate world from Spider-Man himself.

That brings us to Madame Web. First off, the trailer for this one looks great. There was the same mixed levels of excitement for this as there were for Morbius, but as time has gone on, there have been a lot of questions about whether it is even necessary. Thankfully, the trailer has swayed some of that concern, and Dakota Johnson looks like she’s going to do an awesome job in the title role. However, the Madame Web character is less known to mainstream audiences than Morbius was, so this one is again going to be a tough sell to the average moviegoer – especially one that might be feeling that apparent “superhero fatigue” going around.

The thing working in Madame Web‘s favor could be a lower budget. If it wasn’t insanely expensive to produce, there’s a much lower risk of it flopping. It could still underperform, but the lower the budget, the lower the risk; and that leaves a solid chance of it making some money.
