Black Canary

As a huge Black Canary fan, I hate that I even have to toy with this idea, but it does seem like the writing may be on the wall for Dinah Laurel Lance’s upcoming movie. The film was originally commissioned after Jurnee Smollett’s fan-favorite portrayal of the character in Birds of Prey (and the Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) but a lot has changed since then.

This movie is very much tied into the DC Extended Universe, which is already no more thanks to The Flash. With James Gunn and Peter Safran coming in to kickstart their DC Universe, we know what the next chapter of DC films will look like, and as of right now, Black Canary is nowhere to be seen on that list.

The movie’s fate has been in question ever since Warner Bros. Discovery cancelled Batgirl (which had already been mostly filmed). That was planned to be a streaming exclusive movie on HBO Max, as was Black Canary and Blue Beetle. While Blue Beetle was upgraded to a theatrical release (and underperformed), there still hasn’t been any word on the fate of Black Canary.

Writer Misha Green confirmed that the film was still happening even after Batgirl‘s cancellation, but that was before Gunn and Safran announced their new DC Universe slate. It’s been all quiet on the Black Canary front since, which suggests that the movie may be – or could be – cancelled.

We’re hoping that’s not the case as Smollett’s performance in Birds of Prey was amazing, and we would love to see Dinah get some long overdue cinematic spotlight.
