4 movies that will probably be cancelled in 2024
The Authority
We have every faith in James Gunn and Peter Safran and their plan to give audiences the live-action DC Universe they have been waiting for. From Superman: Legacy to the Batman-starring The Brave and the Bold, there are a lot of upcoming titles to look forward to from the DCU.
However, we’re living in an era in which fans have grown a little weary of superhero movies. While the vast majority of them still turn out to see their favorite superheroes on-screen, lesser-known heroes have always struggled at the box office. The shared universe era, particularly with Marvel Studios, has avoided that concern in recent years, but with The Marvels underperforming significantly, that could be the end of that chapter for superhero movies. Even The Flash, who is something of a household name thanks to the TV series, flopped hard, and it was just one of the many recent DC outings to underperform.
With that in mind, The Authority coming so soon into Gunn and Safran’s new chapter for the DC Universe could be a problem. While the title group of heroes would certainly make for a great DC movie, the vast majority of the mainstream audience is still unfamiliar with them and the DCU has not yet amassed that trust with audiences that every movie will be must-see. With that in mind, it might be a wise idea to either move it later into the franchise or evolve it into a TV series on Max.
The problem with the original DCEU was that it just expected audiences to turn up to all of its movies without laying the groundwork, and having The Authority get their own title so soon into the new DC Universe could risk history repeating itself. It’s like Marvel having Eternals in Phase One.
Lesser-known heroes always work far better on television or streaming. Look at The Boys, Invincible or even Gunn’s own Peacemaker. With that in mind, don’t be surprised if the Authority movie is cancelled and repackaged as a series instead.
